Hornets Fall to #6 Hope 80-51

Facing a 7-0 deficit in the first 90 seconds, the Kalamazoo Women's Basketball team fought back to cut the 7 point deficit to 21-16 with just over 11 minutes left in the game. A dry spell for 6 minutes put the Kalamazoo run to a stop as Hope ended the half on a 24-9 run distancing themselves from the Hornets by a 46-25 halftime score.

After the intermission, Hope extended the lead to 34 before the Hornets battled back showing their heart and determination. Although the final score show an 80-51 blowout, many positives resulted from the game against Hope on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Kelsey Johnson led the Hornets with 14 points followed by fellow Sophomore Laura Burnett who added 9 points. Kelsey Johnson also grabbed 6 rebounds. Junior Courtney Kaplan led the Hornets with 4 assists and added 6 points. Senior Nyemade Cooper contributed with 6 points and 4 rebounds.

The Hornets shot a dismal 9-22 from the free throw line and turned the ball over 30 times compared to Hopes 24 turnovers. The Hornets were also outrounded 49-28 and allowed 25 offensive boards which led to 24 Hope points.

Kalamazoo returns to action Wednesday night as they welcome Adrian College to Anderson Athletic Center in hopes of winning their first game of the season. Tip-off is set for 7:30 on Wednesday night.
