Hornets Spoil Bulldogs Senior Day
The Hornets pulled out a 73-68 victory over the Adrian Bulldogs, currently tied for 3rd in the conference, on February 13th, 2010. The Hornets trailed by 2 at half and were down 60-52 with 7 minutes remaining, but put together a 11-0 run over the next 3 minutes to take a 63-60 lead. Crucial free throws missed by the Bulldogs led to Hornet points. A missed free throw by the Hornets followed by an offensive rebound and kick out to Freshman Lauren Rosenthal for a jump shot with 38 seconds remaining ended all hopes of an Adrian comeback. Senior Briana Hendrix connected on 2 free throws late to seal the victory for Kalamazoo.
The Hornets as a team posted a season high in points scored (73). They also limited their turnovers to 16, 10 less than their season average. The Hornets also scored more points in the second half than they had scored in 7 full games this entire season. It was Kalamazoo's highest scoring half in 3 years.
The Hornets were led by Senior Nyemade Cooper who scored 16 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in just 20 minutes. The Hornets received a much needed boost from the Freshmen Duo of Katrina Carlsen and Lauren Rosenthal. Carlsen scored a career-high 15 points on 6-9 shooting from the field and 3-5 from behind the 3 point line. Carlsen only had 1 turnover in 27 minutes. Lauren Rosenthal added 9 points and pulled down 9 rebounds on 3-8 shooting from the field and connecting on what proved to be the game winning shot with under 40 seconds remaining. Also stepping up for the Hornets were Sophomores Carly Zeitlin and Laura Burnett who both added 7 points each (Burnett-career high).
The Hornets conclude the 2009-2010 season with a home game against Trine University. Four seniors will be playing their final game in a Kalamazoo Hornet uniform. Andrea Bedway, Nyemade Cooper, Sarah Thomasma, and Briana Cooper will be playing their final contest for the women's basketball program.

K-Zoo Falls to Albion
Kalamazoo lost to Albion Saturday by a final score of 61-42. The 19 point deficit is a false representation of the game itself. Kalamazoo trailed just 31-30 off a Hendrix 3 point basket before Albion managed to go on a 14-0 run over the next 3:28 of the game giving the Brits a 45-30 lead. Albion was led by their three junior guards who combined for 41 points.
The Hornets received a spark off the bench from Freshman Shooting Guard Anne Colonius who scored a career high 13 points on 4-7 from the field and 3-5 from three point land. Colonius scored 13 points while playing just 22 minutes to lead the Hornets. Kalamazoos bench scored 24 of the Hornets 42 total points.
Kalamazoo was also led by Senior Captain Nyemade Cooper who scored 12 points and grabbed 7rebounds. Cooper was recognized in her first home game since meeting the 1000 point mark which she reached at Alma on January 19th, 2010. Cooper has now scored 1016 points, just 14 points shy of passing 2005 graduate Ashley Riley for 8th all-time on the Kalamazoo College scoring list. Cooper will graduate as the 8th most points in Kalamazoo history unless she is unable to average just over 15 points per game through her last 7 games. If Kalamazoo is able to make the MIAA tournament, Cooper must average just over 13 points per game to reach the top 7 in Kalamazoo scoring history.

After trailing 7-0 less than three minutes into the game at Trine University, the Hornets Senior Captain Briana Hendrix drained 3 consecutive three point baskets sandwiched by 2 baskets from the Thunder. At the 9:00 mark of the first half, the Hornets led the Thunder 12-11 before Kalamazoo point guard Courtney Kaplan went down at the defensive end.
The Hornets entered the half trailing 29-21. The Hornets went through 11:25 seconds without scoring a point. During this Hornet drought, Trine went on a 13-0 run and put the game out of reach despite a late surge from the Hornets. Kalamazoo finished the game on a 16-5 run to eventually drop the decision 49-40.
The Hornets were led by the hot shooting of Senior Captain Briana Hendrix. Hendrix matched her career high in points (23) on 7-14 shooting from behind the three point arc. In addition to her hot shooting, Hendrix had four steals and four rebounds in 37minutes. Hendrix was the only Hornet to have more than one field goal for the game. Hornets Dominate Scots as Cooper Reaches 1000 Point Milestone
Kalamazoo completely dominated at Alma as they earned their first victory of the season. The Hornets trailed 2-0 before taking a 5-2 lead and never looking back. The largest lead was 22 midway through the second half. Poor free throw shooting allowed the Scots to hang around, but the hot three point shooting of Courtney Kaplan and Briana Hendrix throughout the game put a stop to any significant run Alma would start. Kalamazoo took a 26-16 lead into halftime as they played far and away their best defensive effort of the year.
Five minutes into the second half, Alma cut the Hornet lead to 5 (29-24). Before they could inch closer, Briana Hendrix hit one of the most important shots of the game to stop the 8-3 surge of the Scots. Kalamazoo outscored the Scots 42-36 in the second half to win their first conference game in 781 days and post their largest conference margin of victory since February 12, 2005 (Win over Adrian 74-51).
Junior Courtney Kaplan led the Hornets with a career-high 19 points on 6-8 shooting from the field and 4 of 6 from 3 point land. Kaplans previous career-high was against Albion earlier this year when she posted 18 points on 6 of 9 from three point range. Kaplan currently leads the MIAA in a number of statistical categories (3 point field goal percentage, 3 point field goals made (33) which is 9 more than any other player in the conference, and 3 point field goals attemped. Kaplan is also 4th in the conference in minutes played per game (32.62), 9th in total steals (25), and 6th in assists per game (2.92). Senior Briana Hendrix also stepped up for the Hornets with 14 points and 5 steals. Hendrix is currently 3rd place in the conference in 3 point field goals made per game (1.38) and 6th in steals per game (2.23). In addition to Kaplan and Hendrix scoring, Kelsey Johnson added 4 points and 9 rebounds. In the last 3 games, Johnson is averaging over 10 rebounds per a game. She has grabbed 31 rebounds in the last 3 games. In the first 9 games, Johnson grabbed a combined 31 rebounds. Also stepping up for the Hornets was the entire bench. The Hornet bench outscored the Scot bench 19-12 (Colonius-7 points, Carlsen-6 points, Bedway-3 points, Rosenthal-3 points).

Hornets Early Surge Not Enough
The Hornets led Robert Morris early but could not sustain their lead as they dropped their game Saturday versus NAIA Robert Morris University. Robert Morris (17-6 overall) took complete control of the game with just under 3 minutes remaining in the 1st half. With 2:53 remaining in the first half, a 3 point field goal by the Eagles gave them the lead and they would never look back. The 24-24 tie was broken and the Eagles took a 32-24 lead into the half.
Kalamazoo was outscored 36-20 in the second half to lose the game by a final score of 68-44. The tempo of the game was never favorable to the Hornets due to 7 made baskets followed by a free throw on the shot. The Eagles took advantage of the 7 made baskets and finished with 5 made free throws, resulting in 19 points.
Leading the Hornets posting a double double was senior Nyemade Cooper (11 points-10 rebounds). Pitching in with 9 points and 5 rebounds was fellow senior Briana Hendrix. Topping her career high set last game was sophomore Kelsey Johnson. Kelsey grabbed 13 rebounds and added 4 points.

Hornets Drop Heartbreaker in Overtime
After an early 16-6 Kalamazoo run, the Bulldogs of Adrian College battled back with a 25-3 run of their own to take a 31-19 lead with five minutes remaining in the first half. Once the run was stopped by a Nyemade Cooper free throw, the Hornets subbed 5 players into the game that gave them an immediate spark the resulted in a 6-0 Hornet run. It was the most crucial stretch for the Hornets as they cut the halftime lead from double digits to 6 points.

They eventually extended their 6 point lead to 13, but the Hornets showed the most fight all season battling back and leading the game by 4 with just over three minutes remaining. The Bulldogs came down the floor with 90 seconds remaining in the game to hit a three from deep behind the three point arc to cut the Hornet lead to 1. With :25 second left, the Bulldogs drained a corner three point shot to take a 66-64 lead. With the ball and time ticking, the Hornets called a timeout to set up a play for Senior Nyemade Cooper. The ball was entered into Cooper and after two shot misses and rebounds, Cooper tied the game at 66 with 5 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs had no timeouts, and missed a desperation three from half court that would have won the game.
In the overtime session, from the tip, the Bulldogs began to pull away. A broken set play off the tip by the Hornets seemed to deflate the momentum, ultimately breaking the spirits as the Bulldogs outscored the Hornets 14-4 in overtime.
Nyemade Cooper led the Hornets with 20 points and 12 rebounds on 5 of 13 shooting from the field and 10 of 13 from the free throw line. Junior Courtney Kaplan had a standout performance as well contributing 14 points and 6 assists in 42 minutes. Sophomore Kelsey Johnson pulled down a career high 9 rebounds and added 10 points in 36 minutes, also a career high. Freshman Lauren Rosenthal gave the Hornets a spark off the bench with 9 points and a crucial three point from the top of the arc with just under 3 minutes remaining in the game that tied the game at 61. Sophomore Carly Zeitlin added 8 points and 6 rebounds in just 26 minutes. The 70 points scored by the Hornets was the most points scored as a team this season. Kalamazoo shot 41.3% from the field and 30.4% from three point range. Of the 26 Kalamazoo field goals, 16 were on assists. The turnover bug continues to bite the Hornets as they had 29 giveaways which led to 29 Bulldog points.
Senior Nyemade Cooper is now just 19 points away from becoming the 5th player in Kalamazoo Women's Basketball history to have 1000 points and 500 rebounds. Cooper has 12 games to accomplish the feat and is currently 4 points shy of reaching the top 10 in Kalamazoo history in scoring and just 48 points shy of cracking the top 8 in all-time scoring at Kalamazoo. Cooper has also moved up since the start of the year from 6th to 4th in rebounding and is only 6 rebounds shy of 2005 graduate Ashley Riley of becoming the 3rd greatest rebounder in Kalamazoo history. Among Coopers many records, she still holds a number of single game records at Kalamazoo such as most rebounds in a single game (22), free throws made (15), and free throws attempted (23).

Preparing for the Bulldogs
The Kalamazoo Women's Basketball program prepares for the final game of a three-game homestand as they welcome in the Bulldogs from Adrian College on Wednesday evening. The game will be the 11th of the season for the Hornets and the 13th for the Bulldogs. Kalamazoo looks for its first win of the season and first win in the conference (0-10; 0-4 MIAA) as the Bulldogs look to battle to the front of the MIAA as they bring in a record of 6-6 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA. The Bulldogs lost a close game at Olivet on Saturday (52-49). Kalamazoo lost Saturday to conference leader and nationally ranked #6 Hope College (80-51).
The lone common opponent for the Hornets and Bulldogs is Olivet College. Both K-Zoo and Adrian dropped their decisions to Olivet, both suffering close defeats. The Hornets look to stop the scrappy guards of Adrian and exploit their evident size mismatch down low. Tip-off for the game is set for 7:30 at Anderson Athletic Center.

Hornets Fall to #6 Hope 80-51
Facing a 7-0 deficit in the first 90 seconds, the Kalamazoo Women's Basketball team fought back to cut the 7 point deficit to 21-16 with just over 11 minutes left in the game. A dry spell for 6 minutes put the Kalamazoo run to a stop as Hope ended the half on a 24-9 run distancing themselves from the Hornets by a 46-25 halftime score.
After the intermission, Hope extended the lead to 34 before the Hornets battled back showing their heart and determination. Although the final score show an 80-51 blowout, many positives resulted from the game against Hope on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Kelsey Johnson led the Hornets with 14 points followed by fellow Sophomore Laura Burnett who added 9 points. Kelsey Johnson also grabbed 6 rebounds. Junior Courtney Kaplan led the Hornets with 4 assists and added 6 points. Senior Nyemade Cooper contributed with 6 points and 4 rebounds.
The Hornets shot a dismal 9-22 from the free throw line and turned the ball over 30 times compared to Hopes 24 turnovers. The Hornets were also outrounded 49-28 and allowed 25 offensive boards which led to 24 Hope points.

The Hornets Welcome in #6 Hope College Saturday Afternoon
The Hornet's welcome the 6th ranked team in the country (Hope College) to Anderson Athletic Center on Saturday. The conference tilt will tip-off at 3:00 p.m and will be the first of three games at Kalamazoo. The Varsity women tip-off at 3:00 followed by the men's junior varsity (vs. Adrian) at 5:30. The varsity men are the last game of the day as they square off against Adrian.
Seniors Nyemade Cooper, Andrea Bedway, and Sarah Thomasma hope to win the battle in the paint on both ends of the court to give their team a chance at an upset Saturday afternoon.

Belles Hold Off Late Surging Hornets 59-46
The Belles of St. Mary's College held off the Kalamazoo College surge by a final score of 59-46 on Wednesday evening at the Anderson Athletic Center. Kalamazoo jumped out to an 8-2 lead, only to become a distant memory as the Belles capitalized with an 18-0 run over a nine minute span before Senior Nyemade Cooper broke the scoring drought with a free throw. Kalamazoo entered the break with a 31-17 deficit. A big factor in the deficit was the cold shooting from the outside in the first half. Kalamazoo shot 0-9 from the arc and only shot six from the charity stripe.

Kalamazoo College Opens Up 2010 with an MIAA Conference Clash with St. Mary's College
Kalamazoo College opens up the New Year with a clash against St. Mary's College (IN) at 7:30 on January 6th, 2010. The Hornets come into their fourth conference game hungry for a win. The Belles come into the game at Kalamazoo winning 3 of their last 4 contests. The Belles are 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA. The common opponent of both Kalamazoo and St. Mary's is Calvin College. Hornets Drop Home Contest to #1 Davenport
Kalamazoo lost to Davenport, ranked first in the country in NAIA, but a score of 100-57. Davenport (12-1) pressured Kalamazoo throughout the entire game, but the Hornets put 3 separate runs of 6,8,and 7 together throughout the second half. Although the Hornets lost the contest, Kalamazoo was able to focus on goals throughout the second half, many of which they acheived.
The Hornets were led by Sophomore Kelsey Johnson who led the way with a career high 14 points. She was followed by Senior Nyemade Cooper (9 points) and Freshman Katrina Carlsen (9 points). Senior Andrea Bedway added 5 points along with 5 rebounds in 18 minutes for the Hornets. Senior Briana Hendrix added 4 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals in 23 minutes.

Kalamazoo never got on track as they traveled to Calvin following a home contest less than 24 hours before tip-off in Grand Rapids. Calvin, ranked 22nd in the country by D3hoops.com, exploited the Hornets tired legs while capitalizing on 25 K-Zoo turnovers and compiling 28 points off those turnovers. Kalamazoo only notched 3 points off Calvin turnovers, which played a large part in the flow of the game. Calvins bench outscored the Kalamazoo bench 42-14 and Calvin distributed the ball often (15-4 assists-Calvin).

The Hornets cut within 3 points with 3:45 left in the contest (60-57), but could never inch closer as a 3 point shot on a skip pass with 3 seconds remaining on the shot clock shut down the Kalamazoo comeback.
