After trailing 7-0 less than three minutes into the game at Trine University, the Hornets Senior Captain Briana Hendrix drained 3 consecutive three point baskets sandwiched by 2 baskets from the Thunder. At the 9:00 mark of the first half, the Hornets led the Thunder 12-11 before Kalamazoo point guard Courtney Kaplan went down at the defensive end.
The Hornets entered the half trailing 29-21. The Hornets went through 11:25 seconds without scoring a point. During this Hornet drought, Trine went on a 13-0 run and put the game out of reach despite a late surge from the Hornets. Kalamazoo finished the game on a 16-5 run to eventually drop the decision 49-40.
The Hornets were led by the hot shooting of Senior Captain Briana Hendrix. Hendrix matched her career high in points (23) on 7-14 shooting from behind the three point arc. In addition to her hot shooting, Hendrix had four steals and four rebounds in 37minutes. Hendrix was the only Hornet to have more than one field goal for the game. Hendrix scored 23 of the 40 Kalamazoo points Thursday night. Fellow Senior Nyemade Cooper was the second leading scorer with 4 points and managed to pull down a team-high 7 rebounds.
Kalamazoo out rebounded the Thunder 38-31 (+7) and shot a remarkable percentage from the outside compared to Trine (.450-.214). Kalamazoo shot a dismal 41.7% from the free throw line compared to the Thunder shooting 76.9%. Kalamazoo turned the ball over 24 times compared to just 15 Thunder turnovers.
The Hornets face the Thunder again February 20th, 2010 at Anderson Athletic Center in their final regular season game of the year. The Hornets currently trail Alma by 1 game for 8th place in the MIAA conference. The top 8 teams make the tournament which begins February 23rd at the 4 top seeded schools home facility.
