HORNETS PRE-SEASON OUTLOOK:
From Head Coach Sharri L. Brumfield
I am very excited about this season, our players have worked very hard over the summer to improve their skills, strength and agility and it has been extremely beneficial to the start of our season. I am very excited about the 3 freshman I brought in, I believe they will be instrumental in our success this season and for the future of the program. Given the numerous injuries that the Hornets sustained last season, I was not able to lay the foundation of my system so we are somewhat starting from scratch, but once we get everything in, we should make a lot of noise in the MIAA.
We have great leadership and enthusiastic players that play with great passion and are driven to find success, we have great chemistry right now and that is important as we teach the system and look to work together to achieve our team goals and get this program off the ground!
COACHING STAFF
At the helm for the Hornets is second year head coach Sharri L. Brumfield. To round out the staff, Brumfield has added 3 new assistant coach’s, each one brings unique qualities with various experiences and backgrounds.
“It was important to hire a staff that could fulfill my needs as I look to build the program here at K and laying that foundation is critical for our short and long term success, so hiring a solid staff was extremely important,” says Brumfield.
“With Recruiting being the lifeblood of all Intercollegiate programs at all levels, my search for a Recruiting Coordinator was first on my list and it had to be someone with great drive and passion for coaching and someone who wanted to break into the College level.” Enter Brennan Davis, “Brennan has a solid background, he coached for several years, but his most important attributes are his determination and passion to do this job everyday; Recruiting is a very time consuming job and extremely critical in my quest to build a solid program” adds Brumfield. Brennan is a graduate student at Western Michigan University. Adam Navarre and Emily Collins round out the rest of the Hornet staff, Navarre is a graduate assistant at Western Michigan University and is deeply committed to his education and the ROTC program at WMU, he was the manager for the men’s basketball team at WMU in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. Emily is a K College graduate and was also a member of the Hornets women’s basketball squad for 4 seasons. She currently works for the Girl Scouts of America.
CAPTAINS
Captains for the 2009-2010 season are seniors - Andrea Bedway, Nyemade Cooper, Briana Hendrix and junior – Courtney Kaplan. “I am pleased with the great leadership we have on this team, all four of these captains bring different perspectives and contribute in different ways, which is outstanding as we look to develop great team chemistry and it starts with these four young women”.
RETURNERS
The Hornets return 7 players from last year including: Seniors – Andrea Bedway, Nyemade Cooper, Briana Hendrix and Sarah Thomasma. Junior – Courtney Kaplan, Sophomores: Laura Burnett and Carly Zeitlin.
NEW ADDITIONS
Freshman – Lauren Rosenthal, Anne Colonius and Katrina Carlsen, the Hornets will also benefit from the addition of Kelsey Johnson who sat out last season for medical reasons.
STUDY ABROAD
The Hornets have 2 players on Study abroad and will miss the 2009-2010 season. Junior, Michelle Mauiri, from International high school in Troy, MI. chose China for her experience; Takira Lytle, a junior from East Paulding High school in Dallas, GA. chose Spain for her study abroad experience.
INJURIES
Looking back
The Hornets were unable to overcome numerous injuries last season to put together any successful outings losing 4 players to season ending injuries, three of which were starters at the time of their injuries. “Last season was very difficult, we started out well and the wheels fell off the wagon one by one and we just couldn’t get things rolling in the right direction for a sustained period of time. We had kids hurt all the time and when one kid would recover, we would lose 2 for another week. The pattern just kept repeating itself, I felt horrible for the girls, they were doing everything they could to get and stay healthy but it’s not something that you can ultimately control. As a result, we struggled all year. We played games with 5 post players and 2 guards on several occasions and it’s a tough task to continue to reinvent ourselves, day after day, week after week”.
Looking forward
Staying healthy will be critical for the Hornets this season, with a solid roster of 11 players that contribute every night, it will be imperative that we stay healthy.
This season has not been the ideal start that Coach Brumfield hoped for, the Hornets lost Junior guard Michelle Gigowski, who sustained her third concussion during open gyms. The same injury which sent her to the sidelines for the last 14 games of the season last year…and now this third concussion has ended her career. Michelle continues to be a part of the program on a daily basis.
Briana Hendrix is coming off of her third ACL surgery in hopes to finish out her career as a Hornet in her senior year. Brumfield is excited for the return of Briana Hendrix, “Briana is an extraordinarily gifted young lady with great skill, athleticism and high basketball IQ, she brings a lot to the table for the Hornets, so, the sooner we can get her back the better, we feel she can contribute a lot at the guard position as we can make a run in the highly competitive MIAA.”
Sophomore Kelsey Johnson will return after sitting out her freshman campaign for medical reasons. Kelsey is a 5’9 point guard from Dexter High School, MI. Kelsey had a great high school career and fits in well with the Hornets system, “I’m so excited to have Kelsey on the floor, she will be a big contributor for us this year, since she sat out last year, she will have to get in basketball shape, but I look for her to be a solid performer for us” says Brumfield.
